As a year filled with dramatic twists and turns enters its final chapter Galway United’s need for a Terryland Park win is inestimable.

Kenna upbeat after Drogs draw

Control the controllables.  In a relegation battle all any team can do is take care of its own chores.  Whatever is occurring elsewhere cannot be influenced.  On Friday evening Galway United gleaned a point from a lively contest with Drogheda United.  Fifty two miles away at the Carlisle Grounds Finn Harps were notching a vital victory, meaning Galway were eight points from safety.  Jeff Kenna wasn’t looking for a sympathy vote, though, insisting Galway can operate at this level.  "All we can do is look after our own shop. Finn Harps would have been thinking, going to Bray, that is a game they can win and other teams looking at our result will think it is a great point for us.  Obviously they are a further two points ahead, but all we can do is focus on our own game.

Athlone soccer breathes first sigh of relief

It now looks like Athlone Town will still be a League of Ireland club next season after it was revealed at a meeting this week (January 5) that more than half the club’s outstanding debt has been raised in less than a month.

Boyne battle tomorrow

Life as a league of Ireland club has had it’s ups and downs for Castlebar Celtic so far this season. Declan Kilkelly’s men have won one of their first two league games away to Drogheda United a much needed win after loosing their first two games of the season. Celtic entered the A League with much fanfare against Derry City a few weeks ago only to go down 2-1 to the Ulster men and they followed that game up with another defeat in the League Cup three days later. The defeat in the league cup was at the hands of this weekends opponents Finn Harps. The Donegal outfit ran out comfortable 4-0 winners after Celtic let them off the hook on two occasions in the first half. That time out Celtic faced the clubs first team while this weekend, it will be the Harps A side that make their way to Celtic Park.

Following six defeats in eight testing games there is no disguising the importance of Galway United’s encounter with Drogheda United at Terryland Park tomorrow.

Ballina back on top

When the crunch came and Ballina had to see off the champions to retake the top spot in the Super League last weekend, Brendan Kenny’s men didn’t come up short. They had the game wrapped up and the points in the bag with half an hour to go when Eugene Gorman put the ball into the back of the net after a Michael Duffy effort had come back off the post. That goal put the home side into a 3 - 0 lead and Westport were consigned to defeat. The visitors did pull one goal back right at the death through Vinny O’Malley. Westport’s goal ensured that, while Ballina went back to the top of the table, both sides are still level on points, but it is a very slender one goal in the plus column for Ballina Town that keeps them at the summit.

United’s inconsistent form worries Foster ahead of Gypsies’ visit

The past week has brought contrasting fortunes for Galway United, who enjoyed a thrilling success over Derry City, and then suffered a trimming from Drogheda United. That ensures tomorrow’s Terryland Park contest with Bohemians is now in the critical category.
